The following selection of materials were developed by Blaze for use in PLTW Engineering: Principles of Engineering.
Special thanks to Andrea Gabler and Joel Taylor for resources and feedback.
In the course of this project, students design and construct a portable cooler made of recycled and recyclable materials.
For the team contract, students have the choice of assigning themselves roles or using a story points-style system of assigning tasks to themselves instead.
Halfway through the project, the prototypes are tested according to the protocols. The final day of the project is the presentation, which is when the rubric is applied.
This project was developed as part of the Maker Lesson step of my UTeach Maker portfolio, 2018.
Three modules over statics: moments of force, external truss forces, and the method of joints. Each folder contains an instructional video and slides, guided notes, a practice worksheet, an answer key for the worksheet, and a blank Mastery Check (a quiz over the content). Students are expected to:
Watch the instructional video or read the slide deck
Take notes over the video or slides, using the guided notes template or in their own style
Complete the practice worksheet individually or in a small group
Check their answers on the practice to receive feedback
Take and pass the Mastery Check, where they must demonstrate they understand the tested standard before advancing to the next module
I give my students a private progress tracker to show them where they are in each module, and to give supplemental enrichment material related to the topic. There is some copyrighted material in the private progress trackers I use, so I will not share those here.
The implementation method I use here was informed and inspired by the Modern Classrooms Project.
